The Akshardham in the Delhi, India is the largest Hindu Temple in the world. It is dedicated to Lord Swaminarayan who was one of the most known Hindu prophets. This temple depicts the cultural beauty at its best. It is situate at the outskirts of Delhi on the banks of the Yamuna River. The architecture of the temple speaks volumes of the Indian culture from 10,000 years ago. The temple was built over a period of 5 years and it hired the services of 11,000 artisans. Akshardham was inaugurated in November, 2005 and ever since it receives thousands of visitors daily. There is another Akshardham temple in Gandhinagar, the capital of Gujarat state. Akshardham means eternal or lasting forever. There are many things to do in Akshardham. First of all you can visit the main temple in the premises that has a very biog idol of lord Swaminarayan.
The whole temple is built without using a single piece of steel. The main temple inside consists of a total of 234 carved pillars and 20,000 small murtis (idols). It also has a spectacular path called the Gajndra Path and 9 ornate domes. After visiting the main temple you can see the audio animatronics show that has duration of 3 hours. The show consists of the different stages in the life of Lord Swaminarayan and how he left his luxurious life of being a prince to understand the sufferings of people outside his kingdom. Ultimately he achieved enlightenment after his religious teachings to spread the word of humanity. In the show you move from one diorama to the other and see the different events happening in the Lord’s life.
If you are still not tired then you should definitely experience the boat ride. The ride lasts for about 12 minutes and it makes you experience the 10,000 year old Indian heritage and culture. It is a trip through the ancient inventions and discoveries made by renowned Indians. Through the musical fountain at night you can see the fascinating combination of the natural elements such as fire, water, air and earth. You can laze around or take walk in the premises garden which is also called the Garden of India. This is one of the biggest gardens of India with lush green lawns and it has wonderful bronze statues of different Hindu Gods at some places.
One important thing to be noted is that due to security reasons wallets, purses, bags and mobile phones are not allowed in the temple premises. You may either put them in your car or deliver them at the safety deposit boxes at the gate. This temple is a not to be missed sight in Delhi. It symbolizes the architectural brilliance and is spread over 100 acres. Sandstone and marble are the main materials used for building the temple. Do not forget to visit the IMAX theater which shows the documentaries and films of Lord Swaminarayan. You can eat your lunch at the restaurant within the temple premises.
